  6.   So Big--Edna Ferber. Like so many novelists equipped with an
  7. extremely adequate popular technique, Edna Ferber has been
  8. impelled by the spirit of the times into attempting something
  9. "serious." So Big is the result--a novel with a theme. When Dirk
  10. De Jong was a little boy. Selina used to ask him "How big is my
  11. baby?" Then Dirk would stretch his arms and answer "So Big!" But
  12. just how big was he at the end of the story?  As is often the
  13. case, the theme is more important to the writer than to the
  14. reader. What the reader remembers gratefully is the picture of
  15. High Prairie, the portrayal of such characters as Pervus, Selina
  16. herself, Dirk, Julie, and Millionaire Hempel, ex-butcher. These
  17. are done understandingly and clearly, neither after the fashion
  18. of the modern realists nor the old sentimentalists--with enough
  19. of the above-mentioned adequate technique to make the book
  20. thoroughly interesting, if not--in any sense of the
  21. word--great.
